Once again, Healesville CoRE had a stall at the Healesville River Street Market on Sunday 3 June 2018.
Many people were interested in what HCoRE is doing (even some non-locals) and they said that they would like to come along to the public meeting (Our Solar Town – From Dreams to Reality <—- Click here for details) that we’re holding on Thursday 21 June at The Memo in Healesville.
More people signed up as members and we also recorded names and contact details of people who would like to be kept informed of developments.
Some people from out of town took brochures to see what we’ve been up to so far and get some ideas for potentially starting their own community based renewable energy group, so we’ve been spreading the word!
Thanks to the volunteers who ran the stall – Dave, Rosie, Karen, Ron & Marnie
Pensioners will be able to access renewable energy with no upfront costs, to reduce their power bills and their carbon footprint, thanks to the latest round of Solar Savers.
Solar Savers is a partnership between more than 20 Victorian Councils and four regional Greenhouse Alliances
On Saturday 26 May 2018, Healesville CoRE facilitated an event entitled “Solar Energy for Landlords and Tenants”.
Bjorn Sturmberg (SunTenants) gave the keynote talk and explained how tenants and landlords can benefit financially by using newly developed technology to measure energy provided from solar panels. The proposal allows landlords achieve a healthy ROI for placing solar panels on rental properties and this also allow tenants to reduce their power bills.
Bjorn explained the motivation for this proposed solution and spoke about the barriers and complexity that exist. He states that the SunTenants solution is Simple, Fair, Transparent. Click here to see the presentation slide pack from Bjorn.
Paul Loftus, Head of Sales for Powershop, spoke on how important it is to understand exactly what the true cost of electricity that we purchase is. If any retailer offers a good discount, we must apply that discount to the quoted rate per kWh to know the actual cost. We must also be very careful to know the end date of any applied package that a retailer has provided.
Julian Guess from the Yarra Ranges Council gave a “Community Solar Update for Healesville”. He showed photos on the progress for installing PV Solar Panels on the Healesville Memo Hall. Julian also spoke about how Victorian Councils will support pensioners install Solar with zero upfront costs (Look at http://solarsavers.org.au/ ) Julian concluded with a summary of the Bulk Buy project that is in progress. Healesville CoRE is participating in this project. Click here to see the presentation slide pack from Julian.
On Thursday 24 May 2018, Bruce Argyle interviewed Bjorn Sturmberg from Suntenants and Paul Loftus from Powershop. The talk was broadcast by Yarra Valley FM Community Radio (99.1 on your dial) in a regular community program at 9.00 to 10.00am.
Bjorn Sturmberg and Paul Loftus are two of the speakers at the Healesville CoRE Community Workshop on Saturday 26 May 2018. This will be a very informative talk about Solar for Landlords and Tenants.
Congratulations Healesville for attending the “Electricity Production & Storage” event on 28 April 2018
On 28 April 2018, Healesville CoRE arranged presentations for the community about Solar Electricity Production & Storage. The event was extremely well attended and 98 local community people listened to the presenters and interacted with questions and comment.
The following subjects were presented to the audience. The slide packs that were used by Nick. Glen and Julian in their talks can be obtained by clicking on the appropriate section below
- Energy Efficiency in the home by Nick Seymour. Nick has been studying Environmental Engineering and Economics at Monash University for the past 5 years. He is working with another Monash Uni student and they are preparing a Sustainable Energy Report for Healesville.
- Different parts of a Solar System by Glen Morris. Glen has been installing renewable energy systems both on and off-grid for over 20 years. He has been a renewable energy system auditor for both the Clean Energy Council and the New Zealand Government
- Yarra Ranges Council involvement in Renewable Energy initiatives by Julian Guess. Julian is the Sustainability Project Officer with the Yarra Ranges Council. He is responsible for leading Council’s community renewable energy initiatives.
- Rosanna Miguel. Rosanna is Branch Manager of the Healesville Community Bank®. She explained how the bank can help with the finance of a new Solar System as part of the energy-saving program launched by Bendigo Bank’s Generation Green initiative.
The questionnaires completed by attendees at the end of the presentation were very positive and they indicated the value of this talk for the community.
This was a very successful event by Healesville CoRE.
Fifteen Healesville CoRE representatives attended a “Community Solar Models & Legals Workshop” on Sat 24 March 2018. The prime deliverable from this workshop was to establish the most appropriate model for the Healesville community and develop an action plan to take the project forward.
A 2×2 quadrant analysis of effort and impact was used to help prioritise some of the initiatives and projects that the group had identified at a previous workshop.
A Business Model for the selected initiative was addressed and the topics of Technical Structures, Economic Arrangements, Governance Structure and Community Engagement were discussed.
The workshop participants then developed an action plan for the project and this will commence immediately. Details of the project will be announced soon.
This workshop was another successful event arranged by Healesville CoRE.
Well done to all involved.
In June 2017 Healesville CoRE was launched at a community gathering. In the one year since then, we have achieved a lot. Come and hear our project partners talk about our projects that are being put into place and that are envisioned for the future to transform Healesville into a Net Zero town – a town that uses only renewable energy. Hear how the residents and businesses can save money and how we as a community can invest in Healesville’s future.
Thursday 21 June 2018, 7:00pm. See Upcoming Events page for details.
